Riverside Women Soccer Spring 2014 Team began the season on Monday, February 24 with a scrimmage against Durham School of the Arts (DSA).  Marie Muir scored the first goal of the season with a hard shot from the right side of the box for a 1-0 lead at the 18 minute mark in the first half.   In the first two minutes of the second half, Hannah Miles scored off of a deflection in the box from a shot by Kathryn Thacker that the DSA goalkeeper was unable to corral for a 2-0 lead.  A few minutes later, Eliza Butts took a long free kick near the middle of the field and placed it in the right corner of the goal over the goal keeper’s head for a final score of 3-0.  The soccer team’s next game will be Monday, March 3 at Rocky Mount High School.
 

March 11, 2014

In this first game of the regular season for both teams, Riverside dominated the game as they had 21 shots on goal and scored on 7 of them.  Even though this was the first ever women’s soccer game for Research Triangle High School, they played tough defense in the first half and held Riverside to two goals.   In the second half, Riverside offense improved and they scored 5 goals.      Research Triangle  did not have any shots on goal and thus did not score. Four  Riverside players scored with Marie Muir, Eliza Butts and Lexi Newnam scoring 2 goals each and Kathryn Thacker scoring one goal.

The game between Riverside and South Granville was stopped with 28 minutes remaining in the second half because of heavy rain.   In the first half, South Granville scored off of an excellent  corner kick by Olivia Dougherty that was played into the goal by Daphine Brown for a 1-0 lead.   A few minutes later, Eliza Butts hit a free kick into the left corner of the goal that the South Granville goalkeeper was not able to stop.  The half ended with a 1-1 score.  Then after only 12 minutes of play in the second half and with no team being able to mount an offensive threat, the game was stopped.

Riverside had a strong offensive performance against Southern with 18 shots on goals, scoring on 6 of them.   Southern played a strong defensive game in the first half and held Riverside to a 2-0 halftime score.   In the second half, Riverside proved to be the stronger team scoring 4 goals.  Goals were scored by Marie Muir 2, Alexa Dellinger 2, Ellen McAdams 1, and Kellyn Valladares 1.  Keir Witherspoon had an excellent game for Southern in goal by recording  12 saves.

Riverside played a great first half against one of the top teams in the state and held East Chapel Hill to a single goal for a 1-0 score at halftime.  In the second half, East Chapel Hill proved to be a much stronger team and took advantage of a tired and short-handed Riverside team that had several players hurt and unable to play.   East scored 5 goals in the second half for a final score of 6-0.

April 21, 2014

Northern took a  2-0 halftime lead with goals from Nicole Crutchfield and Katlyn Brogden.  In the second half, Nicole Crutchfield scored again with 21 minutes remaining in the game for a 3-0 Northern lead.  Riverside moved Eliza Butts up to the forward position from the back defensive line and she scored  a goal with a hard shot from the right side just outside of the box with 7 minutes remaining in the game for a 3-1 score.   Then both teams traded shots at the goal for the next 6 minutes with neither team scoring until Eliza Butts found the corner of the goal from the right side again with 53 seconds remaining in the game.   On the kick-off, Riverside was able to gain control of the ball and a penalty was called against Northern outside of the box with 25 seconds remaining.   Eliza Butts took the penalty kick and kick it hard toward the goal where  Kathryn Thacker got her foot on it for a tying goal with 23 seconds remaining in the game.    The teams then played two 10 minute overtime periods with neither team scoring, and the game then ended with 3-3 tie.

Riverside had a strong offensive performance against Hillside with 15 shots on goals, scoring on 5 of them.   Kathryn Thacker started the scoring for Riverside with a header off of a corner kick by Alexa Dellinger.    Kathryn followed that score a few minutes later with a hard shot from the left side just outside of the box for a 2-0 lead.     Eliza Butts split two defenders just before halftime for another goal to give Riverside a 3-0 lead at halftime.   In the second half, Marie Muir scored on a header from another corner kick by Alexa Dellinger and Eliza Butts scored again to complete the 5-0 final score.  Kristen Smith had an excellent game for Hillside in goal by recording  10 saves.

Riverside played a solid game against Middle Creek on their home field. Both teams had only two shots on goal in the first half, but Middle Creek was able to convert both of their shots into goals for a 2-0 halftime lead.   In the second half, Riverside was able to only get two shots on goal and like the first half, Riverside was not able to score.  Middle Creek added another goal in the second half and won 3-0.

Riverside played an excellent defensive game with Jordan.  The score at halftime was 0-0 with neither team able to score.   Caitlyn Patton had some great saves to prevent Jordan from scoring.  In the second half Jordan was able to break through the Riverside defense and score two goals.   Alexa Dellinger had a tremendous corner kick that the Jordan goalkeeper was not able to handle to close the score to 2-1.   Riverside was not able to score again and the game ended in a 2-1 loss for Riverside

Marie Muir scored the first goal off of a ball that bounce off of the goalkeeper from a hard shot by Eliza Butts.  The first half ended with Riverside holding onto a 1-0 score.  In the second half, Eliza scored two more goals to give Riverside a 3-0 victory over Person.  Riverside had 18 shots on goal compared to only 2 shots on goal for Person.

Riverside started very slow in this game and let Cleveland jump out to a 2-0 lead at halftime.  Then early in the second half, Cassidy McNierney scored her third goal for Cleveland for a 3-0 lead.  Riverside finally woke up offensively as Ellen McAdams scored to cut the lead to 3-1.  A few minutes later, Kathryn Thacker off of a great cross from Meg Van Horn to further close the gap to 3-2.  Riverside became much more aggressive on offense, but time ran out before Riverside could score again.

May 14, 2014--State Tournament 1st Round Game

Riverside played Panther Creek in the first round of the State Soccer Tournament.  Panther Creek was ranked # 1 in the East Region and #12 in the Nation.  While playing against the top team in the state and #12 in the nation, Riverside held Panther Creek to one offensive goal in the first half.  The second goal credited to Panther Creek was an own-goal scored on a hard defensive play where the ball bounced off of a Riverside defender for a Panther Creek goal.  For the entire first half, Panther Creek was frustrated by the tough defense played by Riverside  and for the hard time they were having in trying to score a goal.   Panther Creek was able to put more pressure on Riverside in the second half and scored 5 goals.  Caitlyn Patton played an excellent game in goal for Riverside by stopping several hard shots in the box and recording 13 saves.  The entire Riverside team played solid defense.   Ellen McAdams had an outstanding game and frustrated the Panther Creek offense by taking the ball away from Panther Creek forwards in the box to prevent scores on several ocassions.
